Our Support Unit
Our Support Unit at Milperra Public School provides a safe, inclusive, and nurturing learning environment for students with additional needs. With small class sizes, a maximum of approximately 7 students per class, we are able to deliver highly personalised programs that support both academic and social growth. Each class has a dedicated teacher and School Learning Support Officer (SLSO), ensuring every child receives the attention and guidance they need to thrive.
Access and Placement
Students are placed in a Support Unit class through the Department of Education’s Access Request process. Families cannot apply directly, but your local school can guide you through the steps. Eligibility is based on significant learning or support needs, and applications are reviewed by a local placement panel. This ensures that support classes are offered to students who will benefit most, based on their individual needs and the Department’s disability criteria.
Who the Support Unit is For
Our Support Unit at Milperra Public School caters for students with autism and/or moderate intellectual disabilities. Every child placed in a support class requires a higher level of specialist support than what is typically provided in mainstream classrooms.
Programs and Approach
Each student has a Personalised Learning and Support Plan (PLSP) developed in consultation with families and, where appropriate, allied health professionals. Our teaching approach is flexible and tailored, focusing on the strengths, needs, and goals of each child. Learning is supported with adjustments to curriculum and classroom practices, and students are encouraged to develop independence, communication, and social skills alongside their academic growth.
Integration and Inclusion
Students in the Support Unit are active members of the Milperra Public School community. Where possible, they join their peers in mainstream classes for learning activities, sport, assemblies, and whole-school events. This integration fosters friendships, social skills, and a strong sense of belonging, while still allowing students to learn in a smaller, supportive environment.
Wellbeing and Family Partnership
We believe that wellbeing and learning go hand in hand. Our staff work closely with families to build strong, positive partnerships that ensure every child feels supported at school and at home. Regular communication, planning meetings, and collaboration with external specialists help us provide the best possible support. We aim to empower families to be active partners in their child’s education journey.
