Key Learning Areas
At Milperra PS, students explore a wide range of important subjects that help them grow and learn about the world around them. We focus on four key learning areas to support your child’s development:
- Science and Technology: Encouraging curiosity and problem-solving as students learn about the natural world and how technology shapes our lives.
- Human Society and Its Environment (HSIE): Helping students understand people, places, history, and communities, including the rich cultures of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples.
- Personal Development, Health and Physical Education (PDHPE): Supporting students to be healthy, active, and confident while building strong relationships and life skills.
- Creative Arts: Inspiring creativity and expression through dance, drama, music, and visual arts, celebrating diverse cultures and talents.
Together, these learning areas provide a balanced education that nurtures curious, caring, and confident learners ready to make a positive difference in their world.
Science & Technology
Science and Technology helps students explore the natural world and how people use tools and technology. They learn through hands-on activities, asking questions, and solving problems.
In Science, students investigate natural phenomena and develop an understanding of the living, physical, and earth systems, exploring how scientific knowledge evolves and how it can be applied to solve real-world problems.
In Technology, students engage in designing, producing, and evaluating solutions using a range of materials and digital tools, developing an understanding of the role of technology in innovation and everyday life.
The program respects Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander knowledge about the land and environment. Science and Technology encourages curiosity, creativity, and responsibility, preparing students to make a positive impact in the future.
Personal Development, Health and Physical Education (PDHPE)
PDHPE helps students learn about being healthy, staying active, and building positive relationships. They develop skills in movement, fitness, safety, and emotional wellbeing.
In PDHPE, students engage in practical activities that develop motor skills, fitness, emotional literacy, and health knowledge. They learn to make informed decisions and develop attitudes that promote lifelong health and wellbeing.
In Physical Education, students develop fundamental and specialised movement skills, participate in physical activities, and appreciate the benefits of active lifestyles.
In Personal Development and Health, students explore emotional wellbeing, relationships, safety, and health issues, gaining knowledge and skills to navigate life’s challenges.
Through fun activities, students gain confidence, learn to work with others, and make healthy choices that support their growth and happiness.
HSIE helps students learn about history, geography, government, and economics. They explore people, places, communities, and how the world changes.
In HSIE, students engage in inquiry-based learning that develops skills in research, critical analysis, communication, and reflection. They explore diverse cultural, historical, social, and environmental contexts.
In History, students investigate people, events, and movements to understand change and continuity over time and the perspectives of different groups.
In Geography, students examine places, environments, and human interactions, developing spatial awareness and sustainability practices.
In Civics and Citizenship, students learn about democratic values, governance, rights, and responsibilities.
HSIE encourages students to be thoughtful, caring, and active members of their communities.
Creative Arts
Creative Arts includes learning in dance, drama, music, and visual arts. Each area helps students express ideas and feelings in different ways. The arts are important in all cultures, including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples, who use art to share their culture and stories. Learning the arts helps students appreciate different cultures and ways of seeing the world.
In Creative Arts, students engage in practical experiences that develop knowledge, understanding and skills in creative arts practices. They develop artistic and aesthetic understandings and the ability to think critically and analyse creative works. Students develop insights into personal, social, cultural, historical and contemporary contexts and perspectives.
In Dance, students engage in composing, performing and appreciating and develop an understanding of dance as a distinct form of human movement that uses the body as an instrument to express and communicate ideas.
In Drama, students engage in making, performing and appreciating and develop an understanding of drama as a practice of embodied storytelling and a way of communicating meaning using imagination to enact people, worlds and experiences.
In Music, students engage in performing, listening to and composing music, developing an understanding of music as a form of personal and cultural expression and a way of connecting through sounds and silence.
In Visual Arts, students engage in making, appreciating and exhibiting, developing an understanding of the ways subject matter and ideas about the world are represented in artworks and how artists communicate ideas to audiences.
Creative Arts encourages creativity, confidence, and self-expression, helping students grow as caring and talented individuals who can share and celebrate culture.
