Attendance
At Milperra Public School (MPS), we know that being present, engaged, and connected to learning every day is essential to your child’s success. Regular attendance helps students build confidence, form strong friendships, and reach their full academic and social potential.
Research from the NSW Department of Education shows that students who attend school consistently benefit from improved academic performance, stronger engagement, and better overall wellbeing. Regular attendance also supports long-term outcomes in health, social connection, and career opportunities.
Attending school every day helps children maintain routines, stay on track with learning, and avoid falling behind. In partnership with families, we are committed to creating a nurturing and supportive environment where every student feels they belong—and where daily attendance is a key step toward a successful future.
Our attendance practices align with the NSW Department of Education Attendance Policy and are designed to address barriers to learning so that all students can access the full range of educational opportunities available.
How We Support Attendance at MPS
We follow a tiered framework of support tailored to our school community. Strategies to encourage good attendance include:
- Early intervention for students at risk of chronic absences
- Individualised attendance charts and incentives for students facing greater challenges
- Online attendance data trackers to monitor attendance and guide support
Our data systems provide clear and transparent information about student attendance, helping school leaders and classroom teachers target support where it is needed most. Staff are regularly trained in NSW DoE Attendance policies and MPS strategies to ensure best practice is consistently applied.
Working with Families
Communication with families is central to our approach. We use proactive, clear, and positive communication to set expectations, provide support, and build strong partnerships that enhance student achievement.
Research highlights a strong link between attendance and positive academic, social, and health outcomes. Students with an attendance rate below 90% are considered at educational risk. At MPS, we aim to foster responsibility, punctuality, and commitment, creating a culture that supports lifelong learning.
Regular attendance is essential for your child to achieve their best, maintain friendships, and develop important life skills. Our goal is for every student to attend at least 90% of the time, ensuring they gain the full benefits of school and all it has to offer.
